A Learning Model Designed for All Brains
ExcelPrep’s learning continuum activates two forces: Academic Rigor & Curriculum (ARC) and Behavior Science — so that learning can be seen and felt by every learner, every instructor, and every family. Whether a child needs one-to-one support in reading but thrives in a group for math, our model places them where they will learn best across any and all skill areas. This is a program designed for all brains.
ARC + Behavior Science: Learning You Can See and Feel
The ExcelPrep continuum activates Academic Rigor & Curriculum (ARC) — the instructional engine of Direct Instruction, Precision Teaching, and ability-based grouping — alongside Behavior Science, which ensures every learner has the behavioral support to access that instruction. A learner can be at Stage 1 in writing, Stage 3 in reading, and Stage 5 in math — all at the same time. When ARC and Behavior Science work together, learning is visible: families see progress, instructors measure it, and learners feel it. This is how all brains learn best.
The Learner Is at the Center — Across Every Skill Area
At ExcelPrep, two forces orbit every learner: Academic Rigor & Curriculum (ARC) provides the instructional structure, and Behavior Science provides the support system that makes learning accessible. A child may be at Stage 1 for writing, Stage 3 for reading, and Stage 5 for math — all at the same time. Every methodology, every grouping decision, every data point exists to place each learner where they will learn best, skill area by skill area.
ARC and Behavior Science orbit around each learner across every skill domain — reading, writing, math, communication, and social skills — creating a system where learning can be seen by instructors, measured through data, and felt by the learner and their family.
Six Stages from One-to-One to Full Group Learning
ExcelPrep uses a flexible learning-stages model that recognizes students progress at different rates — and at different rates across different skill areas. At each stage, ARC provides the instructional rigor and Behavior Science provides the support structure. A learner’s placement is individualized by subject and skill, not as a blanket assignment. When both engines are active, learning is visible to everyone: the learner feels it, the instructor measures it, and the family sees it.
100% One-to-One: Learning to Learn
Students begin with completely individualized instruction in any skill area where they need intensive support. The focus is on building foundational learning skills and behaviors while establishing a strong student-teacher connection. A learner may be at Stage 1 in writing while already at Stage 3 in another domain.
80/20: Introduction to Group Learning
Gradual introduction to group learning environments with 80% individualized support and 20% group participation. Still heavily one-to-one with guided exposure to peers.
60/40: Building Group Readiness
A balanced approach with increasing group instruction. The learner is developing the skills to attend, respond, and participate alongside peers with continued individual support.
50/50: Equal Balance
An equal split between individual and group learning. The learner demonstrates consistent engagement and academic progress across both settings.
Majority Group Instruction
In skill areas where the learner is ready, they transition to primarily group-based learning (60–80% group) with individual support available as needed. A child at Stage 5 in math may still receive more individualized support in reading — this flexibility is what makes the model work for all brains.
100% Group Instruction
Students successfully learning in group settings with peers. The learner has built the endurance, independence, and skills to thrive in a collaborative classroom environment. This is what it looks like when ARC and Behavior Science have done their work — learning that everyone can see and feel.
Academic Rigor & Curriculum (ARC) Powered by Behavior Science
ARC is the instructional engine: four research-based methodologies that ensure rigorous, sequenced, measurable instruction. Behavior Science is the support system: ensuring every learner can access, engage with, and progress through that instruction. Together, they make learning visible.
Homogeneous Grouping
Students are grouped by similar ability levels so instruction meets each learner precisely where they are.
Direct Instruction
Explicit, systematic teaching with clearly designed and sequenced lessons that maximize instructional time.
Precision Teaching
Data-driven instruction with frequent measurement using celeration charts to track learning fluency over time.
Behavior Skills Training
Used as a coaching model for staff development, ensuring every team member delivers instruction with fidelity.
Four Core Principles of Direct Instruction at ExcelPrep
These principles guide every classroom, every lesson, and every interaction between our educators and learners.
Instructional Design
Clearly designed and sequenced lessons and teaching tasks. Every minute of instruction is purposeful, structured, and scaffolded to build mastery.
Ability-Based Instruction
Ongoing assessment drives ability-based academic grouping. Instruction is modified continuously to ensure mastery and retention, not just exposure.
Program Structure
Small group and one-to-one instruction accommodates each student’s rate of learning. Students move to new instructional placements as they progress.
Student Advocacy & Autonomy
Students are aware of their own goals for instruction and mastery. Building confidence and self-advocacy is critical for every learner — and especially powerful for neurodiverse students.
Systems of Support through side-by-side Education, Training, and Mentorship in HOW to do the job and WHAT to do for individual learners WHILE ON the job, is a critical formula in addressing teacher burnout in special education.
PreK–8 Academic Program for All Learners
ExcelPrep Schools
Our PreK–8 academic program activates ARC — Academic Rigor & Curriculum — through Direct Instruction, Precision Teaching, and ability-based grouping. While we specialize in serving children with autism, learning disabilities, ADHD, and dyslexia, the science behind our approach works for every kind of learner. ARC ensures the instruction is rigorous; Behavior Science ensures every learner can access it.
Learners receive 90 minutes per day in core areas of reading, writing, and math in ability-based groups, maintaining general education core standards while differentiating through direct instruction, assistive technology, and individualized support.
ExcelLearning
Behavior Science is activated through our clinical program, ExcelLearning. Our interdisciplinary clinical team provides Applied Behavior Analysis therapy, speech-language pathology, and occupational therapy services.
ARC and Behavior Science work hand-in-hand: therapeutic goals are reinforced throughout the school day, and academic instruction is informed by clinical expertise. This is how we make learning visible — learners feel it, instructors measure it, families see it.
Show Me. Teach Me. See Me. I Can.
Our philosophy centers on the belief that every brain can learn when it is truly seen, heard, and met where it is — across every skill area. We don’t waste instructional time. We listen. We observe. We shift our teaching to meet the child in each domain — and then we give them the space to show us what they can do. ARC provides the rigor. Behavior Science provides the access. Together, they create learning that can be seen and felt — by every learner, every instructor, and every family.
No Wasted Time
Every instructional minute is intentional and productive.
Listen & Observe
Understand each child through careful listening and observation.
Shift to Meet Needs
Adapt methods, technology, and activities to fit the learner.
Build Independent Thinkers
Give children information, instruction, and space to communicate their needs.
