Our Philosophy – ExcelPrep Schools

Our Mission and Philosophy

Empowering every unique mind to learn, grow, and thrive together.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide a nurturing academic setting with concentrated focus on the academic and social success of neurodiverse learners. PreK-8 and an academic ABA program for students ages 5-13. ExcelPrep is committed to the education and social success of children who learn differently.

SHOW ME. TEACH ME. SEE ME. I CAN.

This is more than our motto—it’s the foundation of everything we do at ExcelPrep. We believe that when children are truly seen, explicitly taught, and given the right supports, they can achieve far beyond what traditional education predicts.

What We Believe

Every Brain Can Learn

Neurodiversity is not a barrier to learning—it’s a different pathway that requires specialized instruction. We reject the notion that some children “can’t” learn and instead ask, “How does this child learn best?”

Differentiation Is Not Enough

Traditional classroom differentiation falls short for neurodiverse learners. Our students need Direct Instruction and Precision Teaching—research-based methods that are explicit, systematic, and data-driven.

Ability, Not Age, Determines Placement

We don’t hold students back by grade level or push them forward before they’re ready. Students move through our learning continuum based on mastery and demonstrated ability, ensuring genuine progress rather than social promotion.

Instruction Time Is Sacred

We believe that the time your child is available for instruction should not be wasted. We honor this by taking the time to understand your child—listening to them, observing how they demonstrate knowledge, and shifting how we teach to meet their needs.

Independent Thinkers Are Created, Not Born

We create independent thinkers by giving children information and instruction, helping them understand what they need, and giving them space to communicate those needs. Student advocacy and autonomy are built into our instruction.

Teachers Need Support to Excel

When educators are equipped with the right training, mentorship, and support systems, student success follows. We invest heavily in our staff because their growth directly impacts our learners.

The Learning Continuum: Meeting Students Where They Are

At ExcelPrep, we recognize that students progress at different rates and require varying levels of support. Our learning continuum honors individual differences while maintaining high expectations for all learners.

From One-to-One to Group Learning

Students begin where they need to begin—some require 100% individualized instruction to build foundational learning-to-learn skills, while others are ready for more group-based instruction. As students build competence and confidence, they progress through our six-stage continuum:

  • Stage 1: 100% one-to-one instruction (learning to learn)
  • Stages 2-5: Gradual progression (80/20, 60/40, 50/50, 40/60)
  • Stage 6: 20/80 (primarily group instruction)
  • Goal: 100% successful group learning

The key: Movement through stages is based on the learner’s demonstrated ability and readiness—not their age, grade, or calendar timeline. This prevents the harmful practice of social promotion while ensuring students build true competence.

Why Direct Instruction and Precision Teaching?

Direct Instruction is not “teaching to the test” or rote memorization. It is the most researched and evidence-based instructional method for students with learning differences.

Explicit and Systematic

Nothing is left to chance. Skills are broken down, sequenced logically, and taught explicitly. We don’t assume students will “figure it out”—we show them exactly how.

Mastery-Based Progression

Students don’t move on until they’ve mastered the current skill. This ensures solid foundations and prevents the gaps that plague struggling learners in traditional settings.

Continuous Assessment

Precision Teaching means we measure progress constantly—not just at report card time. This data tells us immediately when instruction needs to adjust, ensuring no child falls through the cracks.

High Expectations, High Support

We maintain general education core standards while providing the intensive, specialized instruction needed to reach them. Neurodiverse learners can achieve grade-level and beyond—they just need the right path to get there.

Data-Driven Instruction

Analysis. Consistency. Clarity. Observation. Understanding. Listening.

Our philosophy of data-driven instruction is built on a simple truth: what gets measured, gets improved. For neurodiverse learners, this is especially critical.

Our Data Approach Includes:

  • Ongoing Assessment: We assess frequently to catch problems early and celebrate wins immediately
  • Ability-Based Instruction: Data tells us exactly where each student is and what they need next
  • Instructional Adjustments: When data shows a student isn’t progressing, we change our approach—not our expectations
  • Student Awareness: Students track their own progress, building self-awareness and advocacy skills
  • Transparent Communication: Families receive regular, data-based updates on their child’s progress

We believe in using technology, hands-on activities, and diverse teaching methods—but always guided by data that tells us what’s working for each unique learner.

Investing in Educators to Impact Students

“Systems of Support through side by side Education, Training, and Mentorship in HOW to do the job and WHAT to do for individual learners WHILE ON the job, is a critical formula in addressing teacher burnout in special education.”

— Landria Seals Green, MA, CCC-SLP, BCBA
ExcelPrep Founder

This quote captures a core truth of our philosophy: student success is impossible without teacher success. Special education has one of the highest burnout rates in the profession—and it’s not because teachers don’t care. It’s because they’re often thrown into complex situations without adequate training, support, or mentorship.

Our Approach to Teacher Development:

Education & Training

All staff receive extensive training in Direct Instruction, Precision Teaching, and behavior management before they step into the classroom. But we don’t stop there.

Side-by-Side Mentorship

New educators work alongside experienced mentors who model, coach, and provide real-time feedback. This isn’t a one-time orientation—it’s ongoing support.

Professional Learning Communities

Our staff meets regularly to analyze student data, troubleshoot challenges, and share successful strategies. Teaching at ExcelPrep is collaborative, not isolating.

Behavior Skills Training Model

We use the same evidence-based approach for staff development that we use for students: instruction, modeling, practice, and feedback.

When educators know HOW to teach neurodiverse learners and WHAT to do in specific situations, and they receive support WHILE doing the work, burnout decreases and student outcomes soar. This is our formula.

The Power of Connection

We believe strong student-teacher connections are critical for academic success, especially for neurodiverse learners who may have experienced frustration or failure in traditional settings.

We Listen

Before we teach, we listen. We observe how students demonstrate knowledge, what motivates them, what frustrates them, and how they communicate their needs.

We See the Whole Child

Academic instruction happens within the context of social-emotional support. We educate the whole child—honoring their strengths, addressing their challenges, and building their confidence.

We Shift Our Approach

If a student isn’t learning, we don’t blame the student. We change our teaching. This requires knowing each child deeply and being willing to adapt.

We Build Advocacy

Students learn to understand their own learning goals, track their progress, and communicate what they need. This self-awareness is essential for lifelong success.

Why This Philosophy Matters

Traditional education often fails neurodiverse learners—not because these children can’t learn, but because the system wasn’t designed for how they learn.

Traditional Approach Often Leads To:

  • Students promoted socially, not academically
  • Gaps that compound year after year
  • Frustration, anxiety, and damaged self-esteem
  • Teachers feeling unprepared and overwhelmed
  • Parents feeling helpless and unheard

The ExcelPrep Approach Results In:

  • Real mastery and genuine academic progress
  • Solid foundations with no critical gaps
  • Confidence, competence, and joy in learning
  • Teachers who are skilled, supported, and effective
  • Families who are partners in their child’s success

At ExcelPrep, we don’t just teach differently—we believe differently. We believe neurodiverse learners deserve specialized instruction delivered by highly trained educators in an environment designed specifically for how they learn. This is our commitment. This is our philosophy.
