ExcelPrep’s Learning Continuum and Program Format

The Learning Continuum

ExcelPrep uses a flexible learning stages model that recognizes students progress at different rates and require varying levels of instructional support. The continuum moves students through six stages:

The Six Learning Stages

Stage 1: 100% One-to-One Learning to Learn

  • Students begin with completely individualized instruction
  • Focus on building foundational learning skills and behaviors
  • Intensive support to establish student-teacher connection

Stage 2: 80/20 (80% one-to-one, 20% group)

  • Gradual introduction to group learning
  • Still heavily individualized support

Stage 3: 60/40

  • Balanced approach with increasing group instruction

Stage 4: 50/50

  • Equal split between individual and group learning

Stage 5: 40/60

  • Majority group instruction with individual support as needed

Stage 6: 20/80

  • Primarily group-based learning with minimal individual support

Final Goal: 100% Group Instruction

  • Students successfully learning in group settings with peers

This continuum recognizes that “the learner” is at the center, and placement along this continuum is individualized based on each student’s current abilities and needs.

Program Format

Main Program

PreK-8 Academic Program

  • Focused on Direct Instruction and Precision Teaching
  • Specialized for neurodiverse learners including Autism, Learning Disabilities, ADHD, and more

Note: ABA Therapy is supported through our clinical program, ExcelLearning.

Core Instructional Approach

The program uses four research-based methodologies:

  1. Homogeneous Grouping – Students grouped by similar ability levels
  2. Direct Instruction – Explicit, systematic teaching methods
  3. Precision Teaching – Data-driven instruction with frequent measurement
  4. Behavior Skills Training – Used as a coaching model for staff development

Four Core Principles of Direct Instruction

1. Instructional Design

  • Clearly designed and sequenced lessons and teaching tasks

2. Ability-Based Instruction

  • Ongoing assessment and ability-based academic instruction
  • Instruction modified to ensure mastery and retention

3. Program Structure

  • Small group and one-to-one instruction to accommodate student’s rate of learning
  • Students can move to new instructional placements as they progress

4. Student Advocacy and Autonomy

  • Student awareness about goals for instruction and mastery
  • Building confidence and self-advocacy is critical for neurodiverse learners

Data-Driven Instruction Philosophy

The program emphasizes:

  • Analysis, Consistency, Clarity, Observation, Understanding, Listening
  • Maintaining general education core standards
  • Differentiating using direct instruction, assistive technology, and more
  • Extending education and training to ongoing Professional Learning Mentorship Communities

“Systems of Support through side by side Education, Training, and Mentorship in HOW to do the job and WHAT to do for individual learners WHILE ON the job, is a critical formula in addressing teacher burnout in special education.”

— Landria Seals Green, ExcelPrep Founder

Teaching Philosophy Summary

“SHOW ME. TEACH ME. SEE ME. I CAN.”

The philosophy centers on:

  • Not wasting instructional time
  • Understanding each child through listening and observation
  • Shifting teaching methods to meet individual needs
  • Using technology and hands-on activities
  • Creating independent thinkers by giving children information, instruction, and space to communicate their needs
